Tutorial: How to send someone a gift from SL Marketplace

I was browsing the search terms that led people to the blog, and I came across this one: why cant i send a gift to someone from the sl marketplace?

Good point! On the old XstreetSL site, before Linden Lab changed the code and it became SL Marketplace, the ‘send as gift’ option was right there on the item’s page, but now it seems to have gone. Well, it’s not gone; it’s just hidden a little bit and slightly more convoluted to get to (ie: more mouse-clicking!).

NOTE: You can’t gift a freebie item. Only items that cost L$1 or more can be gifted.

Hop behind the cut for a quick tutorial on sending a gift to someone via SL Marketplace.

UPDATE! Thankfully, Linden Lab have now sorted this problem out. There is an option to send a gift right by the usual ‘add to cart’ section now :)

First, find your item and click ‘Add To Cart’ –

Then, click the little green Cart link on the top-right of the page –

You’ll be taken to a view of what’s in your shopping cart. This is where you can edit item quantities (Tip: to remove an item from your cart, simply change the quantity to zero and click ‘update quantities’) and it’s here that you send your gifts from. See the ‘Send As Gift’ link arrowed there? Click it!

A new little window will pop up. Fill in the name of the avatar you’re gifting to (if you’re sending to a newly-registered avatar who only has a single username, then their surname will be ‘Resident’). It will auto-fill (and turn blue) if you’ve spelled the name correctly and the avatar does actually exist (which is useful, because it ensures you’ve not made a typo and tried to send something to a non-existent avatar!). You can also write an optional message to your giftee. Once you’re done, click ‘Update’ –

You’ll be returned to your cart, which will now show that your item is a gift for [name of the avatar you’re gifting to] –

Select your payment option and proceed to checkout as normal (or continue shopping, if you’re on a spree!). Your item will be delivered in-world to your giftee, and any optional message that you typed will appear to them in green text. If you didn’t type anything in the Optional Message box, your giftee will still receive a green text message, stating something like: Xstreet SL Central Authority: [YOUR NAME] has given you a gift of “[ITEM NAME]” from! (Yes, amusingly it still says XStreetSL. Maybe Linden Lab needs to get onto that and change it to SL Marketplace!)

And that’s how to send a gift from SL Marketplace. Happy gifting!

  1. I’m sorry to make a comment that has nothing to do with the point of your excellent tutorial…but those boots are cool. :-) Do you know if they come with a separate invisiprim that can be left out (and an alpha thrown in)?

    • They do indeed have separate invisiprims, but there’s no alpha layer (possibly you could find a copy/mod alpha from another pair of boots and modify that to work?).

Update: There’s a full-perm set of alpha layers for both feet and legs, here on SL Marketplace :)

      • Oh yes, that’s what I meant….my favorite alpha for long boots is the one that came with some Slink boots I got months ago. It’s copy, so I wear it with other knee-length boots, because it’s just exactly the right length.

Sometimes I play with alphas even with stuff that comes with them, if they aren’t the right length. I put Maitreya alphas in folders for other shoes. It’s like the days when I would mix and match eyebrows from different skins. I had some ankle boots that allowed my ankles to poke through, so I put a Maitreya alpha on and voila. I love alphas. I like being on a dance floor w/o chunky invisiprims all around my feet. I’m happy that many of my older shoes/boots come with a separate invisiprim that I can now delete.

BTW after I posted I saw that you talked about the boots on your ponderings blog…great outfit you put together for them!

  2. Thanks for the tip. One question though: On the new Marketplace site I don’t seem to able to find the freebie items anymore. Do you happen to know how to locate such items quickly rather than using the drop-down menus indicating a price range? Thanks, Ari

    • Hi, Arialle :)

I’m afraid there doesn’t seem to be a link to the freebies like there was on the old XstreetSL site, so using the dropdown menus is the only way to do it. Checking the L$1-L$10 section in the left-hand sidebar will narrow things down a little bit, but that’s about all you can do to help the search along.
