Hints and tips: Getting a message in-world when you can’t log in

I just checked the search terms for the blog and spotted the following:

sl send im while offline

That got me thinking, because there are times when we need to get a message to someone in-world, sometimes urgently, but we can’t log in ourselves. Maybe we’re at work and we forgot to ask our partner to pay the rent that’s due on our in-world home, or we need to tell a friend that our home internet is out of action so not to worry if they don’t see us for a bit.

Hop behind the cut for a simple, free way around the problem.

Enter zonkster.com, a website that has all kinds of nifty tools. All you need to do is head to the Zonkster HQ in-world and click the big blue prim on the floor to get your Zonkster code. Do it next time you’re in-world, because chances are you won’t be able to do it when you actually need to use the tool! Be prepared, and all that ;)

Be sure to guard your code well, and don’t let anyone else see it. That code is the only verification method that your message is coming from you, so don’t give anyone the ability to impersonate you!

Make a note of the code you’re given, then when you need to send a message to someone, go to the Zonkster page and enter the information requested. You get 400 characters for your message, and don’t forget to enter your code. Note: if you check the ‘send me a copy’ option, be aware that the resulting IM will count towards your messages, and if you can’t get online then your messages will cap all the more quickly.

As you can see from the screencap below, there is also a version you can access from your mobile/cellphone.

Assuming that SL isn’t too busy, the recipient of your message should see it in their main chat window within the next ten seconds.

Sadly, there is no return option, but if you have Send IM To Email When Offline enabled (you can do this in Preferences when in-world, or at your account page on the Second Life website under Accounts > Contact Information) then they can send you a traditional IM in reply. (And, given how spotty SL is at sending these through to email lately, you’ll just have to both cross your fingers that you receive their reply…)

    • You’re welcome, AK :) I found out about Zonkster some time ago when I was researching the WikiTipi, one of their other gadgets (which is something else that I need to blog about). It’s one of those useful tools that needs to be passed on, because we all get those moments of panic when we can’t log in-world and yet need to get a message to someone.

  2. I love the idea of Zonkster, but unfortunately when I went over to set it up the website was gone and a message is left saying “We’ll be back soon.”

    • Sadly, it’s been like that for a few months now, Thalia. Hopefully it’ll come back soon.
