I have a very bad habit, and it’s not doing my inventory any good.
When I unpack a boxed item, I always take the box back into my inventory (unless the items inside it were no-copy and the box is empty). I do this with the thought that, should the asset server eat the unpacked folders, I will at least have the original box to re-rez and unpack.
Usually, I shove that unpacked box into a ‘To Be Archived’ folder, the contents of which get shoved into an archive prim when I remember to do it. But lately, with all the hunts going on, and with grabbing freebies to blog about… well, I’ve not been doing that. So I have folders containing boxed items and folders containing those boxed items’ contents.
It’s looking messy in there, and I need to sort it out.
Have you got any bad SL habits?
Edit: OK, the number is increasing now. Scroll to the bottom for additional suggestions, credited to those that suggested them :)
Just a list, as the items have come to me. No doubt the number of items will increase (got something you think should be on the list? Leave a comment!)
Hop behind the cut, for 30+ things every newbie should know before starting Second Life.
She can’t be using Windlight, right? She honestly must not be able to see the fact that, well, nobody can see. She could be wearing an astoundingly expensive skin but who could tell? (OK, her torso and face hadn’t rezzed, but believe me when it had it wasn’t much clearer.)
Ladies. If you’re not running Windlight, then don’t wear facelights, for the simple reason that you will not be able to SEE just how powerful the myriad balls attached to your person might be. And for heaven’s sake, the maximum number of local lights that the SL viewer can render is six.
You only need one. Two or three at most. Eight? That’s kind of… yeah.
Excuse me if I’m textually gnashing my teeth here, but I’ve spent a short while today, hovering around the three Shoe Fly Shoes lucky chairs at Sarah Nerd’s Freebie Paradise. For those not in the know, Shoe Fly Shoes are offering a fabulous pair of superb designer quality monogrammed red leather shoes in these chairs. The letters don’t change all that regularly (around every 30 minutes or so) so while I was there, I kept scanning my radar to see if anyone with the current letters was in range.
Four times, people were. And so I sent four IMs: one to each person. The IM consisted of something that could be understood hopefully by most languages: Shoe Fly Shoes Lucky Chair at Sarah Nerds = ‘T’ (or whichever letter the person’s name began with) followed by the SLurl of my exact location in front of the chairs.
The first person I sent the IM to didn’t reply, even though I could see her eyeline moving (I had ‘show look at’ enabled), so I knew she wasn’t AFK. The second – who was standing about 10m away from me teleported out a minute later, was still online when I checked her profile, but didn’t bother to reply, not even to say ‘thanks but no thanks’. The third, again standing close by, said, ‘OK’ and didn’t move, then teleported out (to be fair, I don’t think English was her first language).
The fourth, however, walked over to the chairs, sat down and received her prize, then got up and walked away again without so much as a ‘thank you’. This was not a newbie avatar; she was created in 2007. She had English as a language spoken in her profile. I had cammed across the entire store to find her so I could send the IM.
People, if someone helps you to win an awesome lucky chair prize, a simple ‘thank you’ costs nothing.
I started this blog with WordPress because I liked the ease of posting, the dashboard (which has recently been greatly improved) and most of all the great stats package offered.
One of the things that stats package contains is a daily list of search terms that bring people to this blog. Usually they’re very relevant to the theme of SL for Nowt: things like second life guy freebies blog, inventory management tips blogs and best male hair in sl.
Sometimes, though, I end up in fits of the giggles at some of the weird and wonderful (and clearly unintentional) search terms that bring people to the blog. Half the fun of it is trying to figure out how on earth those words brought up SL for Nowt, but usually it turns out to be obvious. Not always, though, as you can see below.
A sample from recent days:
girls with no knickers on (that would be from the Non-Newbieness for Girls post where I discussed layers, and why Roxie’s knickers were showing above her pants)
great arse (really, I’m terribly flattered!)
how can boys hide spots fast (no, I don’t have a clue about this one either…)
centerfold girls (try the top shelf)
panties out of the jeans (you’re nothing but a bunch of pervs!)
a guy with two working penises (O_o)
I’ll keep you posted on any further hilarities ;)
We all love a lucky chair (especially when it comes up with our letter!) and the best lucky chairs are the ones with ‘?’ in them (which anyone can sit on and win the prize for), and that change regularly.
Some of the best lucky chairs in that respect are the ones at Sn@tch. Ivey is incredibly generous to her customers, and sometimes the area around those chairs gets packed out. (When it does, check out the riot vendor right next to them, btw. I got a fab outfit there for just 50L$ yesterday, because there were so many people in the store!)
BUT. Yes, there’s a but. Ladies (and gents) please adhere to a couple of simple unspoken ‘Lucky Chair Etiquette’ rules.
1 – When you’ve won, move away from the chair as soon as you can.
2 – DON’T stand so close to the darn chair that you might as well be sitting in it anyway. In many cases (not by any means all of them), people do this in the mistaken belief they’ll be the first to jump on a wildcard round, but I’ve seen people leap from the other side of the room to get those, so don’t think that by standing with your shins banging against the chair you’ll be the first to get the prize. It’s also not going to ‘block’ the chair for other people.
That’s way too close.
Yes, it could have been a mistake, or a simple case of a newbie not knowing what to do. But if you’re so close that you can smell the upholstery cleaner, then you’re too close.
My apologies to those that tried to buy my Monochrome Ladies Starter Kit from Baileya and only received a notecard and landmark, and not the kit itself. I didn’t even notice that the four sets of eyebrows that went into the skin packs were no transfer, which meant the whole kit ended up as no transfer.
Many, many thanks to Nikki for contacting me about this. I’ve now put full transfer eyebrows in the pack, reloaded the advertisement board in the stall, checked my transaction history, and sent replacement kits to everyone that bought one.
A day late, I know, but I wanted to share something with you. Yesterday, SL for Nowt passed a milestone:
20,000 views and counting!
Thank you, everyone, for being with me as I’ve blogged about freebies and tried to help newbies. Your comments are much appreciated, and I’ve had a blast over this past year. Here’s to 2009!
Just hopping onto the computer quickly to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas. I hope today brings you everything you had hoped for :)
Note: This isn’t a freebie post. Mar’s skin and hair were 1L$/0L$ but the rest of her outfit was paid-for. This is just to show you her new look :)
Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but Mar’s looking delightful…
Yes, I’m sick of winter already. At least in Second Life we don’t have to wrap up warm (although we can do, if we choose to). So I’ve put together a new look for Mar, and you could say it has a touch of the Nicole Kidman’s about it. Not all of it is free (very little, in fact) – it’s one of my very few ‘paid-for’ looks. (The skin, however, is a dollarbie, and the hair was the last free release gift from House of Heart, so it’s partially free!)
The shape is my new shape from my Ladies’ Starter Kit (scroll down a few posts to find that). The skin is the 1L$ ‘Cornsilk’ skin from Style Your Destiny. The hair is House of Heart’s ‘Magic’ in Irish Red (which was in the Dec 5th free hair release pack). The dress is one I bought at Relay For Life this year, from Bossa Nova (‘Primavera’, in ‘garden': all proceeds from sales to RFL), and the shoes are my one big luxury: Adam n’ Eve’s ‘Lotus’ shoes in chartreuse.
A couple more pics behind the cut, of Mar’s new and very distinctive look!
